How to Select a Logistics School

Certain schools have created programs for warehouse workers due to the growing demand for education that is specifically on logistics. Businesses want them to know how their work affects customers and how their work in one area can affect activities at other sites, says Kathleen Hedland, director of research and education for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.

There are numerous degree options, however they all include foundation courses covering fundamental concepts like supply chain management and operations procurement and transportation networks, inventory management and warehousing. Some universities also offer specializations, such as e-commerce and retail logistics, logistics and transportation analysis Global Logistics Management and others.

Graduates are prepared to serve in roles as logisticians, supply chain managers buying agents, industrial production managers, and distribution managers. They can also pursue certifications such as the Certified Supply Chain Manager (CSCM) or the Certified Public Contract Manager (CPCM) to boost their career prospects.

Consider whether the university is accredited. This is usually done by a group such as the U.S. Department of Education, or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. These organizations recognize 8,200 institutions, and 44,000 programs. Find a school that has an excellent student-teacher ratio, as it will ensure that you receive a high-quality education.

Some colleges offer online or hybrid programs that combine classroom instruction and virtual learning opportunities. This type of program may appeal to those who have the flexibility of their schedules or who are unable to take classes in a traditional manner. Some online-only programs provide associate degrees or certificates, while others provide bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
